One example of calendar-based method is the Standard Days Method. In this system, the first day of menstrual period up to the seventh day is considered infertile. Apparently, this method is only applicable to women whose cycles are always between 26 and 32 days in length. Moreover, women whose ages are in between late 30s and early 40s may find this method ineffective since they tend to have shorter menstrual cycles. If your age falls on this group you may consider the fifth day (rather than the eight day) as the start of fertile phase. The disadvantage of this method is that it may not accurately indicate the day of ovulation since the length of post-ovulation phase can sometimes vary between menstrual cycles.
A better way to predict the day of ovulation is through observing (at least two of) the three fertility signs. This method is also fairly easy and natural. It entails monitoring your basal body temperature, cervical mucus, and cervical position. You only need to spare a couple of minutes of your time, especially in the morning.

Upon ovulation, a woman’s ovum has only about 15 to 16 hours to live (others up to 24 hours). The ovum needs only a single viable sperm to unite with to become a new bundle of joy after about nine months. Thus, timing is important. When you have tracked that your basal body temperature has significantly changed, your cervical mucus is stretchy and slipperiest, and your cervix is soft to touch and high, your ovulation may be approaching very soon. This is the best time to have unprotected sexual intercourse. Remember, your ovum has only few hours to survive, thus, to have higher chances of getting pregnant do not make your ovum “wait”. You can already have sexual intercourse couple of days prior to ovulation since the sperm can live for about three to five days within the vagina with the help of your cervical fluid. Making the sperms “ready” before the ovum is released increases your chance of successful and healthy conception.
Recent studies have found that pregnancy from unprotected intercourse that pays no regard to the “timing” is quite risky. Embryos produced from unplanned pregnancies are at an increased risk of miscarriage and birth defects. This is largely due to the aged gametes involved in conception [1]. It is important that the sperms are of best quality at the time of ovulation.
